Book Review: Later (2021) - Stephen King

So I found this one to be just okay. I don't think it necessarily ever lives up to it's premise, nor surpass a certain movie that it is pretty directly comparable to. This is a really tough book to review without giving any spoilers, needless to say it references other Stephen King works in two different ways. It's all pretty well worn territory for King though, doesn't bring much new to the table. So where I think it was successful, it has a first person narrative and did a decent job. I do think the narrator sounds older than the 22 years he's supposed to be. I do think King could use an editor. I know he has one, of course, but I feel like his books aren't edited beyond typos and grammatical errors, there's a lot of erroneous information given by the protagonist here. That said, the novel is fine and it's short enough to recommend a read if you're a Stephen King fan!

As I speak, I've written through the sixth story in the series, feature complete and I'm fairly happy with where the story is at and where it is headed. Book Review: Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke (2021) - Eric LaRocca

I said on twitter and I'll say it here, I think Eric LaRocca is a welcome, talented addition to the horror indie scene and I can't wait to see what is next.  So "Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke" is a pretty evocative title to me. It brings together many images in my head and I'll say that the actual novella slightly lives up to these images. A similar title and I've seen other people make this comparison, that evokes similar feelings and images for me is "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", which is on my To-Read docket and will be done fairly soon. As for THGWSWLS it takes place in the year 2000, at the dawn of the internet age. At the heart of the novel are two LBTQ lesbian characters, Agnes and Zoe and their interactions an LBGT message board and then subsequently a chat program similar to AOL Instant Messenger or Yahoo Messenger, though I don't think it's ever specified which, could be wrong on that. Book Review: If It Bleeds (2020) - Stephen King

  Caveat - King is one of my two favorite authors. That said, he's very prolific and with that comes for me, not every story is a hit. He's always a great writer, but it's okay to me that sometimes novels just don't connect with me. This was one of them that didn't. The titled story definitely carries a lot of the weight of this novella collection. The rest of the stories didn't really do anything for me. Mr. Harrigan's Phone - 2/5 Pretty good premise, but in King fashion, falls apart in the last act. Was at it's best when he was doing the Coming of Age thing, no one is better at that than him. The junior high stuff is great, the rest of the story is so-so, predictable. All amounts to nothing. Sometimes dehd is beddah.
